The Port Authority and Dept of Environment advises boaters using the South Sound channel to exercise caution as the catamaran that wrecked west of the channel has apparently disintegrated and current may wash parts of it into the channel. Boaters are therefore advised to proceed into and out of the channel with caution until it has been deemed safe and debris free.

The Port Authority of the Cayman Islands has introduced online payment capability for faster cargo clearance in Grand Cayman. Until now, this was restricted to accounts with pre-cleared credit only. Following these enhancements, companies and residents of Cayman can pay port fees using their Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card.
The online payment facility makes “the process faster and easier, reducing the time that importers need to spend on administration related to their shipment”. Melissa Ebanks, Deputy Director & Chief Commercial Officer, said: “We are delighted that this functionality is up and running, this is a great component for our website and will make the process more efficient for Cayman businesses and residents to get their cargo cleared through the Port.”
In order to pay port fees online, users simply need to register for an online account via the Port Authority of the Cayman Islands website: www.caymanport.com/new-user-sign-up-request/.

Committed to their plans to spark students‘ interest in the shipping industry, the Port Authority of the Cayman Islands (PACI) and the Women‘s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Cayman Islands, took part in the CIFEC Career Expo, 21-22 September, 2017. PACI has also partnered with CIFEC and will be providing internships for students in CIFEC‘s Internship Program.
Several Port staff and WISTA members were present at the expo to educate students about the Port‘s operations, career opportunities in the shipping industry, and the Cayman Maritime scholarship.
The Port Director, Mr. Clement Reid, stated, “This is the Port‘s first time taking part in this expo, but we see the importance of participating in these types of events and internship programs. Students gain firsthand knowledge and experience, and advice about what is required in this industry. In this way, the Port further supports Cayman‘s future through knowledge and opportunities, in addition to its operations that facilitate international trade.ˮ
Mrs. Dorisley Jackson, President of WISTA (Cayman Islands), said, “There are extensive opportunities in the shipping industry across the world and we hope to encourage more students to pursue careers in this industry.ˮ

Port Authority of the Cayman Islands Port Director, Clement Reid informs Cayman 27 that in the shipping industry, port efficiency is measured in how many containers are moved from ship to shore hourly. He states, ports like Singapore, Long Beach, New York and Savannah, Georgia come in at around 27 to 29 moves per hour, and Cayman is right on their heels at 25 to 27 moves hourly.
Mr. Reid highlighted that “The average container that comes in for our major importers such as Progressive Distributors, Hurley’s, and the big supermarkets, takes 15 minutes between the ship and to delivery at Progressive. That’s unheard of in any port around the world.”
7-year old Asher Reid, son of Port Director for Cayman Port has always been environmentally conscious. This was evident in his efforts to help rescue a turtle hatchling washed ashore due to high winds and seas from the brushing Hurricane Irma.
The Port Authority reached out to the Department of Environment to release the endangered Green sea turtle back to its natural habitat – the ocean.

The Port Authority of the Cayman Islands celebrated its 40th Anniversary in July and reports that in this time they have only expanded their footprint by 5%. With finite space for expansion, the vision of Cayman Port is to go vertical, thus the aim to triple its storage capacity. Clement Reid, Port Director, told Cayman 27 “It will allow us to go from storing 900 TEU’s, which is the equivalent of a 20-foot container box, to 3000 TEU’s just by changing our equipment.” The first two (of six) rubber-tired gantry cranes standing nine stories tall are slated to arrive next February, giving the port the muscle to stack containers higher and wider, said Mr. Reid.
Other discussions surrounded foresight on legislation and transshipment – the full story can be viewed at Cayman 27.
The Port Authority of the Cayman Islands would like to inform the public that cargo vessels operation will resume as normal at 18:00 on 12th September 2017.
